A native of Mississippi, John Griffin, DMD, graduated from Tupelo High School in Tupelo, Mississippi. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from Mississippi State University and a Doctor of Dental Medicine from The University of Mississippi Medical Center, School of Dentistry. This degree was followed by a fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, also at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. Following completion of this fellowship program, Dr. Griffin chose the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, for his internship and residency in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery.

He is board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the International Board of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Griffin is a board examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and examines candidates for board certification on a yearly basis.

He is actively involved in research and is the founder and Director of the Baptist Memorial Hospital Fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. This is an accredited program that gives one recipient per year a unique opportunity to study the vast field of Cosmetic and Reconstructive Facial Surgery.

Dr. Griffin is on staff at three major universities and rotates residents from these institutions through his practice. He is the author of many scientific articles and textbooks and lectures frequently across the country on the subject of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

Every year, we, in conjunction with the Baptist Memorial Hospital – Golden Triangle, host a fellowship program for an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. The program is designed to provide the fellow experience and exposure to reconstructive or cosmetic surgery. The fellow works under the supervision of Dr. Griffin and assists him in complex reconstructive cases.

Our program is accredited, and admission to the program is highly selective. The candidate must complete his internship and residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and must be board eligible. There are very few accredited programs in the country; therefore, admission for this 12-month appointment is highly competitive.
